Origins
We are so lucky to be part of a network of friends and family that has helped us become the people we are today. Here are some of our favorite memories that have shaped our philosophies on family, friendship, parenting, and community.
Jen’s Story
Jen was born in Los Angeles, to parents who immigrated to the United States from El Salvador in the 1970s. She grew up in the Koreatown neighborhood of LA, primarily with her dad and paternal grandmother, though briefly joined by her mom and brother, Aldo.
Karl’s Story
Karl was born in Princeton, New Jersey, before moving to the swamps of Georgia and later, the ‘burbs of Ohio. He shared this interstate journey with his younger siblings, Eric and Natalie. His dad comes from a long line of Chicagoans of German-Norwegian-Irish descent and his mom was the first US-born child of her Australian-American family.
Jen and Karl’s Story
Jen and Karl met as young 22-year-old grad students at UC Santa Cruz, during a vice presidential debate viewing-party (Biden vs. Palin!) in 2008. They bonded over a post-debate game of Taboo, guessing each others’ answers as if they had known each other for years. Could they sense that night what was in store for their future together?
They tied the knot in Los Angeles in 2013, and welcomed their first baby boy, Ernesto, in San Francisco seven years later. In 2022, they made it back home and bought their first home in Altadena, California
